BRMHS Students in the Radio Training Program Win at Intercollegiate Broadcasting System Radio Awards

Baton Rouge Magnet High School (BRMHS) students in the school’s Radio Training Program took home top honors in four categories during this year’s Intercollegiate Broadcasting System Radio Awards held in New York over the weekend.

Beau Gaspard, a senior in the program, placed first in the highly competitive “Sports Update” category. The two-minute sportscast featured soundbites from coaches and players along with a preview of upcoming games. Beau wrote, recorded and edited the production which showcased the deep skill set that he developed during his time in the program and through his internship with the Louisiana Radio Network.

Wren Harms, a third year student in the Radio Training Program won for “Best Podcast” which featured a brief history of and traditional recipe for making a classic Louisiana gumbo. The program discussed the African origin of the dish along with common variations and described a simple recipe that anyone can make at home.

Sophomore Jesse Jones took home the “Best Logo” award for his 1260AM KBRH artwork. The design features the Baton Rouge skyline atop the station’s call letters and frequency. The new logo will be featured on a soon to be released KBRH t-shirt that will be available on the station’s website.

Beau Gaspard, Athony Prather, and Kace Kieschnick won “Best Commercial” for their spec ad for Chicken Shack. The advertisement was written as a poem and featured a variety of sound effects that promoted the iconic fried chicken chain.

Schools from across the United States submitted over 3000 entries to this year’s Intercollegiate Broadcasting System Awards. The competition recognizes the nation’s best and most innovative productions in a variety of categories including On-Air, News, Sports, Marketing, Production, and Social Media.

“I couldn’t be more proud of our students and the exceptional work they’ve created through the Radio Training Program,”said Todd Delaney, General Manager of WBRH/KBRH and Radio Broadcasting teacher. “It’s a joy to work with such a talented and creative group of students who are committed to bringing our program to new heights on the national stage. I’m very excited for the future of the program and I can’t wait to hear the amazing things our students will do next.”
